Galerie Zwart Huis is pleased to present ‘Elegy’, the fifth solo exhibition of Jan Vanriet (1948) at the gallery. The series 'Elegy' visualizes the ‘Siege of Leningrad’ (1941-44) and the terror of ideologies vs the individual. Vanriet depicts a society dominated by ideology, hardship and suffering. In some works, the message is quite straightforward; others are more enigmatic.
Although the series focuses on events that have taken place in the forties, it is painfully contemporary. Vanriet started the series in 2019. The war in Ukraine makes 'Elegy' almost prophetic.

On the occasion of the exhibition, the gallery has published a book and a limited edition of 4 watercoloured risoprints, numbered and signed by the artist.
